Susan Alexander

I have used my hands since the age of five and have always enjoyed being creative and making things in all sorts of ways, from sewing and dressmaking to building furniture. So, surgery was a natural choice of career for me.  But anatomy was a sticking point for me as I had found it really boring and hard. But after going on a course by Prof Vishy, I changed my attitude completely and was able to pass my surgical exams in London and went on to specialise in orthopaedic surgery.
During my surgical training, I completed a PhD in molecular biology and a MSc in Bioengineering.  I also did a diploma in adult education. This course changed my approach to education;  it was no longer about ‘how can I teach you?’, but more importantly – ‘how can I help you learn?’.
I love being creative and especially relish the challenge of taking a subject that is dull and boring and turning it into making it fun and interesting. This is the very essence of The Funky Professor.
After completing my surgical training, I was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and was the academic lead for the BSc and MSc in Trauma and Orthopaedics at University College London.
After having twins, it became clear that I needed to reorganise my time, and I focussed on what I love best – I currently work at the Fortius Clinic  and King Edward VII Hospital in London and am passionate about fixing shoulders, creating content for The Funky Professor and spending time with my family and dogs.

Gill Harris

I grew up on the banks of Kings Billabong Wildlife Reserve, Victoria, Australia, and it was these remarkable wetlands that filled me with awe and inspiration.

Being creative and a hopeless romantic, I began taking pictures and this transformed how I saw the landscape around me.  Through my final years of secondary school my Pentax K1000 camera went everywhere with me and together we created my portfolio for Year 12.

Sadly, I did not get into the photography course of my choice.  But, with every life journey, this disappointment opened up a new door for me.  I was offered a place to study Media at La Trobe University, Melbourne.  It was here that my love affair with video and post-production began.

My Dad was a vascular surgeon and his life as a surgeon became one of my main subjects.  This included many hours filming him operating and treating patients.  I never desired to be a doctor but you could say that production and medicine have always walked a parallel path for me.

After completing my BA I found my dream job at Channel 9 (Melbourne).  This part of my career was thrilling and cemented my love of creating something beautiful from the imagination and bringing it to life on the screen.

When I moved to London, I freelanced as an editor for Sky News and worked there for ten years.  During this time, I met and married my husband, also a surgeon, and this is how I met Susan Alexander.

Susan and my husband were both taught by Vishy Mahadevan.  Susan wanted to capture his unique style of teaching on video and this is when she approached me.  With her passionate vision for changing the way we learn anatomy and my creative background in production, we came together and The Funky Professor was not only born but has evolved into what it is today.
